Milan Malpensa Airport - Case Story

Milan Malpensa Airport implemented Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ to control cost and improve process efficiency while at the same time maintaining security and customer satisfaction.

IMPROVED BAGGAGE PERFORMANCE PROVIDING COST SAVINGS FOR MILAN MALPENSA AIRPORT

Milan Malpensa Airport implemented Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ to control cost and improve process efficiency while at the same time maintaining security and customer satisfaction.

  • Cost savings and higher baggage throughput
  • Improved baggage process transparency
  • Eliminated manual encoding stations in the baggage handling system

The challenge

Before the implementation, Milan Malpensa Airport experienced a heavy increase in the number of passengers. That meant consequential capacity growth and increased efficiency requirements. An ambitious development plan including the implementation of supporting technology was drafted to support the substantial growth.

The solution

To handle the increasing number of passengers it was necessary to advance the baggage performance. Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ was implemented to gain 100% read rates in the baggage handling system leading to elimination of manual sortation of check-in baggage. The solution covers RFID integration in all check-in baggage tags, RFID infrastructure for check-in and the baggage handling conveyors as well as a baggage reconciliation system. Lyngsoe Systems integrated this passive RFID system into the existing control and scanner systems. The system utilizes the information from both barcode and RFID, but can be operational solely on RFID.

Benefits

  • Costs savings and increase throughput of baggage
  • Improved baggage process transparency
  • Complete automated system with no enconding required

Results

After implementing Lyngsoe LIVE Logistics™ Milan Malpensa Airport went from a read rate in the baggage handling system of 93% to 100%. This has led to reduction of costs, faster baggage processing time and advances in baggage process transparency.
