POST DANMARK - ROLL CONTAINER MANAGEMENT

One of the main issues being addressed by the roll container tracking project is Post Denmark’s need to take control of, and better manage, their transportation assets. The head of logistics at Post Denmark stated: “For us to provide an effi cient service and meet our customers’ service-level agreements, it is essential that roll containers are available in the necessary numbers and in the right place.”

Another primary project requirement was to ensure that the required containers were always available at the customers’ premises and within Post Denmark’s own facilities. This should overcome the tendency for planned or unplanned hoarding of roll containers that causes shortages elsewhere, especially at peak times such as Christmas.

Additionally, the lack of visibility of roll container whereabouts led to unnecessary loss as it was not possible to identify where the roll containers disappeared, but the expensive purchase of new roll containers was necessary to meet the customer service level agreements.

The requirements
Lyngsoe Systems are committed to providing value adding RFID solutions that meet the requirements of any individual application. We can ensure successful projects through an in-depth knowledge and proven experience on how to apply RFID technology to logistic processes to support postal operations. The powerful combination of in-house RFID and extensive mail and parcel process experience enabled us to support Post Denmark in their decision to implement an asset management solution, which would meet business requirements and add value.

The solution
The Lyngsoe Roll Container Asset Management System is implemented in Post Denmark’s nationwide logistic network covering both collection and distribution hubs as well as sorting centres.

The project includes RFID tagging of more than 36,000 roll containers within the Parcel Division. All gates are covered by RFID-data-capture equipment and, since all hubs were equipped with RFID-data-capture systems prior to this project, the Asset Management solution was able to take advantage of the existing RFID infrastructure.

The solution also includes the well-proven Lyngsoe Asset Management System enable full, real-time transparency of the location of each roll container. It also includes a handheld terminal solution for the consignment of roll container, product and destination, so enabling load control on all roll containers. This overcomes mis-sending errors and provides realtime volume forecasting into all facilities in the network, providing effi cient and on time production and distribution. In addition, an integrated handheld terminal solution designed to track and trace individual parcels provides key customers with shipment visibility throughout the whole logistic network. Finally, Lyngsoe Systems supplied the Asset Management solution with interfaces to surrounding systems – such as SAP and legacy systems of Post Denmark – for route planning, volume forecast, etc
